"Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quite reflection will come even more effective action." - Peter F. Drucker
The week between the Christmas Holiday and the New Year is one that I love to use to reflect, to look back and see where I've been and to see what progress has been made. This is not an original act nor one that is exclusive, but one that all should find time to do.
Did I accomplish all that I intended? Hardly, nor should I, since to accomplish all that I intended would only mean my goals were too complacent and average. Did I accomplish some of what I wanted? Yes, and I am thankful for the advancement I have made as a trader.
One of my primary goals was to become a respected trader, not in anyone elses eyes, but in my own, to trust what I see and trade what I know, follow my experience, and listen to the experience of others. There is a fine line between success and failure in trading, and 2009 was a year that showed me I have the mental metal to make it, and that is an accomplishment I find extremely satisfying. No one else can tell us, if we can or can't. No one else can show us when we will or won't. No one else wills us out of bed at 2 am. No one else can make you do research. No one else can make you think. No one else can teach us to want to learn. No one else can tell you not to stop. No one but you, and 2009, I told myself I can and will.
So did I make my goals in 2009, yes and no, the yes's were far greater then the no's, and the no's made progress so that in 2010 that might just become... yes.
Take time, find time to close out the noise and ask yourself. What? How? Why? When? Reflection allows the mind to accept the past and put it to use in the future. What will you learn if you do not stop and look at what you have accomplished or failed to accomplish?
Did I accomplish all of my goals? No. Will I accomplish all of my goals in 2010? I hope not.
My goal of this blog was not to pat myself on the back, but to help all of us to reflect on what has occurred for each of us. Charles Dickens is quoted as saying "Reflect upon your present blessings - of which every man has many - no[t] on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some."
